When your animal travels, an IATA (International Air Transport Association) normalized cage must be prepared prior to the departure. The cage must allow to your pet to crouch, to turn around, or to stand up. Be careful, the access to the plane can be denied if the cage doesn’t respond to the IATA requirements. If your pet is traveling from an "unlisted" country, then a rabies titer blood test will be required. The rabies titer test must be completed at least 30 days after their rabies vaccination and at least 3 months before traveling to the EU. This test must be completed by an authorized (USDA-Accredited) vet and the sample must be sent to an EU approved laboratory.

TAP, the only Portuguese airline, allows cats and dogs in regular flights, in the cabin or hold. This one is rather easy, all you need to do is get your pet a EU Pet Passport. The EU Pet Passport is issued by your veterinarian at your country of origin and must be obtained before travel.

When your pet lands, they won’t be quarantined if their documents are all in order, and will be able to leave the airport to travel to their new home with you. You’ll only need an import permit if you have more than five pets to transport to your new home. Your chosen vet must sign this certificate no more than 10 days before your pet departs for Portugal, and must do so in a different colour ink to the one used to print the document. You can also report if your pet is ever lost, your address changes, etc. There is a nominal fee to register your pet, and a considerable fine if you don’t, so worth the few minutes it takes to get formally registered.

If you have a rigid container, the animal has to travel in the hold. The combined weight of the animal and the container will decide whether your best friend can travel with you in the cabin or the hold. If the total weight is no more than 8kg, it can be carried in the cabin.
